Feng shui in home design is believed to influence a household’s vitality, health and harmony. A beautiful house can still be an uncomfortable one if it carries basic feng shui mistakes — most of which, tellingly, are really functional-layout problems. Here are the 5 most common mistakes and their remedies, worth reviewing before the drawings are finalised.

Office layouts have their own principles too — see feng shui in office design.

1. Front door aligned with the back door or a long corridor

The front door is regarded as the “mouth of energy” drawing vitality into the home. When it lines up straight with the back door or a long corridor, energy passes through without gathering, creating a sense of unease. The fix: place a screen, a decorative cabinet or a small feature garden to slow the flow — regulating the feng shui while adding visual depth.

2. Kitchen next to the bathroom or facing the entrance

The kitchen represents fire and warmth; the bathroom carries the water element. Placing the two side by side creates a sense of conflict — quite apart from the very practical hygiene issue. The fix: keep a sensible distance, reorient the stove, or use frosted glass or timber slat screens for a soft separation that stays airy.

3. Bedhead against a window

The bedroom needs quiet and privacy. A bedhead directly under a window sits in a strong air current, which is associated with poor sleep and fatigue. The fix: position the bed with solid backing behind it, away from windows and overhead beams; if the position cannot change, use a tall headboard and thick curtains to soften the effect.

4. Bathroom door opening straight onto the living or dining room

A bathroom door facing the shared living area hurts both the aesthetics and everyday comfort — odour and privacy alike. The fix: change the door swing or position, use a partition or screen to block the direct sightline, and make sure the bathroom extraction works well.

5. Poor natural light and a gloomy palette

A dim house in dark tones feels heavy and damp. The fix: enlarge glazed openings, use sheer curtains, choose a light and neutral palette, and add greenery to make the space brighter and fresher.

Feng shui should be part of the design, not an afterthought

What all 5 mistakes have in common: they are functional-layout problems — the positions of doors, kitchen and bed, the circulation and the light. Feng shui therefore works best when it enters at the layout-drawing stage, rather than being “patched” with ornamental objects after the house is finished. Coordinating layout, electrical, waterproofing and finishes together lets the feng shui solution serve real everyday function.

AIC designs and builds apartment and home interiors as a single-point design-build contractor, with over 10 years of experience (since 2016 under the predecessor Nhan Viet; AIC was founded in 2019) and two in-house factories (1,200 m² and 600 m²). From the existing condition, AIC advises on a layout that satisfies both feng shui and function, produces a BOQ estimate within roughly 4 working hours, and hands over with a warranty of up to 24 months. Frequently asked questions

Which feng shui mistake is the most serious in home design?

The mistakes tied to the main functional layout — front door aligned with the back door, kitchen beside the bathroom — are usually the hardest to fix because they are locked into the structure and floor plan. Resolve them at the drawing stage rather than remediating after construction.

Can feng shui mistakes be fixed after the house is built?

Yes, but only partially. Many can be softened with screens, partitions, curtains, greenery and lighting. Mistakes involving fixed positions (kitchen, doors, rooms), however, are only fully resolved by adjusting the design itself.

Does feng shui conflict with modern design?

Not necessarily. Many feng shui remedies coincide with plain good design: sufficient light, ventilation, sensible circulation and bedroom privacy. Feng shui pairs comfortably with a modern style through frosted glass, timber slats and intelligent layout.
