A proper cold room starts with three questions: what goods, what temperature, how many door-openings per day. From those come the cooling-load calculation, the right panel thickness, refrigeration sized with redundancy, and doors matched to traffic. Sensitive goods like pharmaceuticals and cosmetics add continuous logged temperature monitoring, drift alarms and incident procedures — GSP/GDP storage requirements the contractor must understand at design stage, not discover at inspection. Cooling load first, equipment second

Load depends on volume, target temperature, door-opening frequency and incoming goods temperature — get it wrong and compressors run overloaded or waste power; AIC calculates before specifying.

Redundancy for high-value goods

Sensitive inventory needs rotating redundant compressor sets — one fails, the other carries — plus remote alarms; a small premium against the value of one spoiled consignment.

Panels and thermal-bridge detailing

PIR/PU panels at the right thickness for the temperature band, tight camlock joints, careful floor–wall–ceiling junctions; one small gap collects ice and destroys panels from inside.

Doors and air curtains

Heavy sliding doors or high-speed roll doors depending on traffic; frequently opened rooms need air curtains or airlock vestibules — the door loses more cold than the walls ever will.

Continuous logged monitoring

GSP/GDP-regulated goods need automatic logging sensors, phone alerts on drift and exportable charts for inspectors — installed from day one, not retrofitted.

Backup power and incident procedures

Grid failure is a cold room's biggest risk — plan generator capacity or priority backup supply, with written incident procedures for the operating team.

What does a cold room cost?

It depends mostly on volume, temperature band and redundancy level: a 10–25°C chilled room costs far less than a 2–8°C cold room or a freezer. Because the variables are wide, AIC surveys and calculates the cooling load first, then returns an itemised BOQ — panels, refrigeration, doors, monitoring — within 4 working hours.

How does a pharmaceutical cold room differ from food storage?

Compliance: GSP/GDP-regulated storage needs installation qualification records, continuously logged monitoring, drift alarms and temperature-mapping studies. AIC designs these requirements in from the drawings so acceptance records feed directly into your qualification file.

How long does installation inside an existing warehouse take?

A 50–200m² panel-built room typically takes 3–6 weeks including panels, refrigeration, electrical and a continuous 48–72-hour temperature acceptance test before goods go in. Surrounding operations continue normally during the build.
